How many icons do you have? My goodness... Are you one of those guys who's desktop background IS a bunch of links that fill the entire screen? :) Anyways, it sounds like maybe it is sorting the links by the type of file/folder they are linked to. Not sure, I have never done a arrange by type on my desktop.. :) I usually drag and drop the icons into groups where I want them, but I only keep a few. Go into C:\Documents and settings\\Desktop and switch to a "details" view. Then, arrange by type there, and take a look at how it is arranging them, maybe you will get a clue as to why they are arranged the way they are. Make sure you have turned off the folder option to hide the extension of known file types (tools -> folder options -> view).
