This is not a "normal" update and in this case it does make sense at least to delay.
MS themselves say that if you have SP2 and all the subsequent updates, SP3 offers
you little. As it is already apparent that it brings significant risks (no surprise
there) I would say wait until the guinea pigs (as Mr Rice would say) have worked
through the installation problems.
6 months would be my guess at a sensible pause.
