File sharing computer won't accept login info

I have three computers on a hub. Two are running XP professional service pack 3,
one is running 2000. They used to all share folders and printers just fine. Within
the past few weeks one of the XP systems (A) began asking for a login when either
of the other two try and access A's shared folders or printers. On the other XP
system (B) the login account is set and grayed out (no ability to change) typing
the password of the indicated account does not yield access - only a return to the
login window. The 2000 system (C) is allowed to indicate a target account and password
- but trying any of the valid account/password combos vaid for A still yields a return
to the login screen. I've noticed a new auto update KB941693 dealing with security
for local access - could that be it? Computer A can see and access B & C just fine
- it's just being coy about letting anyone in. B and C can share things just fine.
All three have Windows firewall off with Norton's on. I've tried turning it off
as well on A, but problem is same. I just applied service pack 3 in desperate attempt
at resolution - no go.
