IBM should have included the option/software to make a back up CD/DVD if it could
be done. Have you checked with them to see if it is possible?
Is it possible? Yes probably, but you will need third party software and the knowledge/experience
to do it. Can't say for sure as I would have to see the files that were in the recovery
partition.
Your other option is to image the current drive to a back up hard drive (once everything
is installed how you want it) and to optical media with something like Ghost, Drive
Image or the other popular imaging software programs. That way, you just dump an
image back on the HDD instead of having to reinstall/recover the system. The issue
is that time sensitive programs and utilities (such as subscription based software)
may not work correctly from an old image.
So on your system, it may be possible, but it could be a big headache and not something
we can really help with from this forum. IBM would/should be the best source of
info since they know how their systems are set up and if it's possible to make a
backup CD/DVD from the recovery/backup partition..
