xp taking up more space on c drive

hi i have a 10 gb partion on my cdrive running windowsxp prof.. but recently i have observed that my windows folder keeps increasing its size on the disk.. it is taking up 4.5 gb of space on the cdrive, due to which i m not able to install any more softwares as some softwares requires disk space to work... is there any way i can reduce the size taken up by xp.. or is this how xp works?? i heard that taking off the restore points will help.. but i was not sure how to do it.. can any one pls find a way to my problem...
