unknown dwindling free space

well, as always, im fixing my family's computer problems myself. My brother, as of
recently, has had his free space dissapearing randomly. his 80gig hard drive is left
with less then a megabyte usually, and it fluctuates. another thing is, he disabled
system restore, because he never uses it, and figures he can fix things manually.......but
that should have freed up around 10gigs of space. it freed up 19mbs, which quickly
went down to below one. whatever might this be?
