This problem has been resolved; and just in case anyone else might experience the 
same thing I'll explain what I did to clear it.

I booted into the Recovery Console and ran the bootfix command. This reconstructed 
the boot sector and eliminated the Vista stuff. Now when I boot the machine, only 
one boot option window appears with the selections entered in boot.ini. which are 
XP and Recovery Console.
