Problems with directx

My laptop is running windows xp pro sp2. I recently tried to install a game when i got the error: Unable to Locate Component. This application has failed to start because D3DX9_25.DLL was not found. .... So i figured that directx might be corrupt but when i try to install it the progress bar gets to about a sliver and doesn't move (i left it over night). I am kinda at a loss.
