I suspect there is some confusion about SP3. If you have kept your Computer up-todate,
via Windows Update, you already have everything you need from SP3.

The Value in, and problem with SP3, as it stands, is that it encompasses ALL updates,
Security and others, since SP2 was issued. This is true for Updates that are needed
and not needed by individual Systems. (not sure if SP2 is included)

The problems encountered, I suspect, are caused by Operator expectations that SP3
is needed, and will enhance performance, inspite of the fact that their System already
has what is needed via Windows pdate.

The Value of SP3 is in having all the updates on-hand, should you need to reinstall
WinXP+updates. Slipstreaming Updates into the Winxp Install media makes reloading
windows much simpler, as long as only appropriate components are installed. One inappropriately
installed component of SP3 could trash a new install. At 500+mb, Sp3 provides lots
of room for errors/problems.

The problem is that this leaves it up to the SP3 Installer Package to determine which
updates are needed by the current Configuration. (a function previously provided
by the Windows Update Scan, on Windows update Web site).

I could be wrong in this, but it seems like a Crap-Shoot to me. The only way to know
is Roll-the Dice, but be prepared for problems with a Full system Backup on a separate
HDD or Removable Media.

I would not rely on the Uninstall SP3 feature, since it's doubtful that it will return
a fully functional system. Same goes for System Restore, which is Historically un-reliable.

Just my opinion, but untill MS is confident enough to release SP3 on CD, I'm going
to leave it alone. I might make exception if my System should fail and require a
Clean install, to get it up-and running.

Reiterating, If you have kept your System up-todate, SP3 has nothing new for you.
It won't/can't help, but certainly can hurt.

Again IMHO, based on recent increase in SP3 problems posted on various WinXP Forums.
