XP stalls sometimes on startup

I could use some help. Something is causing XP Pro (SP2) to stall occasionally when
it boots up. The little "safely remove hardware" sign will show up in my system
tray (I have USB activated), then the system will just hang. If I press the restart
button a few times, startup will continue to Zonealarm and be fine. This happens
even if I turn off everything in the msconfig/startup tab.

The system had worked fine for ages until a few weeks ago. I don't remember installing
anything that would have caused this problem.

I have run Kaspersky, updated to latest virus files, several times and found no virus.
I am perplexed and really could use some good advice on how to fix the problem.

Thank you in advance!
