New LCD monitor problem

I bought a new monitor and i have a old computer but it has win xp on it.
When i go to display settings and it set to 1024/768 i get lines running through
the monitor Diagonally.
If i leave it at 800/600 it is fine.. but the display is very large.
Do i need a new video card.... I may just leave it at 800/600 setting. for now.
I did get some software with the monitor , but i am not sure if the drivers got downloaded.
