Regardless of the screen resolution, if you go to Appearance and Themes in the Control 
Panel, and click on Display Properties, you can reset the desktop Font Size. There 
are three choices: Normal, Large, and Extra Large.

My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 215TW 21" monitor with a native resolution of 
1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop Font Size set at Extra Large.
