I've been installing SP3 on all my customer's machines.. Probably 15-20 times in
the last couple weeks.
Ofcourse, SP3 goes on after I clean everything else up and remove malware, etc.
So far, I have not had a single issue, until today. Today I got the STOP 0x0000007E
error. I googled it and immediately found the microsoft article telling about how
to turn off the intelppm service.
It is definitely an issue with OEM recovery images. The fix, by turning off the
intelppm service, does work. SP3 was successful after this.
I install SP3 on all customer machines because part of my service charge is to make
sure all patches and updates are installed. I would rather install SP3 and resolve
any issues the customer might have before they bring the PC back to me because windows
update automatically installed it. Besides today's issue, I haven't had any issues
at all. I'm becoming much more comfortable with doing it, and trust that it will
probably not mess anything up.
Lets face it. I think most of the SP3 issues are caused by poorly maintained, or
infected PCs that are running like trash before the install. You can't blame SP3
for "breaking" a system that wasn't working correctly anyways. :)
