I am fairly sure that the fix from DougKnox did not cause your CD and DVD drive to
disappear from Windows device manager. Firstly, having cast my eye over the fix from
DougKnox, I can tell that if I applied it to my PC (which has a CD burner and a DVD
drive) it would have absolutely no effect whatsoever, because what the fix does is
just delete a few registry entries which do not appear on my (working) PC anyway,
so I think that is a red herring. The symptoms you indicated i.e. the device manager
was reporting a problem with the yellow shreiks against the CD/DVD drives, indicated
something more like it knew the drives ought to be there (because it was trying to
load the drivers for them) but could not see the drives connected to your system.
That might have indicated a hardware fault, or maybe the drives (or associated controller)
were disabled in your PC BIOS settings. Now, having de-installed the drivers and
rebooted, the system still cannot see the drives and thus cannot reload the drivers
for them automatically for you (as it should). I think you are looking at a different
type of problem. You said that there are yellow shrieks against other things in your
Device Manager - what are those? It might be a clue. Cheers. Spexx.
You are not paranoid. They really do have it in for
you.
