I think the general issue here is that what ISPs provide just doesn't cut the mustard.
Norton is very poor - the engine is very old and just not up to dealing with modern
threats, while also interfering with SP3 upgrade to such an extent that it renders
the system unbootable. McAfee also has a dinosaur under the hood. These are the ones
often included in ISP packages. They lull the (novice) user into a false sense of
security and I have dealt with countless cases of Norton sitting idly by while serious
threats were at work on the PC. In fact, all the anti-malware packages have huge
holes in them, which is why you need a number of different products to cover all
areas. I use Avast anti-virus, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-aware2007, Spyware Blaster,
Sunbelt Counterspy (paid for) for starters, plus a few other bits and bobs occasionally
for confidence. The last time I got hit by a virus (qadovnel - brand new at the time)
none of these countermeasures actually reported virus activity - only Spybot reported
that a registry setting was being changed and that was the only clue I got initially.
I am also aware of a serious weakness/yawning gap in these products which allows
me to circumvent them and install code to run in a privileged environment without
them batting an eyelid! It's a good job I don't write viruses and I am keeping tight-lipped
about how it is done. I am currently writing software to close the gap, meantime
checking manually on the areas that need monitoring. Fighting malware threats is
becoming ever more complex and these old products are now next to useless. Hope this
helps. Cheers. Spexx.
