Hi,
I have a similar problem in that my laptop's factory DVD drive has started to disappear
from My Computer, and not be recognized.
This began, seemingly out of the blue one day, when I was trying to burn some files
to disk. It had worked fine up until then, and even now works fine about 50% of the
time.
Recently I've been playing a game from CD, and as long as I leave the disk in the
drive, it seems to work fine. However, if I swap that disk out for a new one, or
put in a blank disk, there is a good chance that the drive will stop working.
Then, the drive will usually not work for a few days, then eventually upon booting
up, it will be back to "normal".
When the drive is "gone" it does not appear in My Computer, or in Device Manager,
almost as if the computer has no DVD drive.
Just like Mr. Duggins, my drive is getting power and spins disks that I put in manually
(opens when I push the button etc..)
Could this be a DLA-related problem? I once had problems with the Sonic co. DLA software
pre-installed on my laptop. I tried to download an update for the software from Sonic's
website, but was unsuccessful, and therefore currently have no DLA software loaded.
I think this episode occurred right after the first time my DVD drive manifested
problems.
Thanks for any advice you may have!
