Severe slowdown

My stepson has an XP box. It has a nippy processor and 3GB of ram plus a whizzo graphics
card.

It's running just about every game known to boy and the latest AVG antivirus (free
edition).

It seems to have slowed down considerably. I can discount viruses as AVG is present,
updated and working correctly. Also this slowdown has been continuing in severity
for months.

The hdd is about 160gb and has about 15% free space.

As a test, I tried one of his games and it's so slow it's unplayable. It's a game
I played before.

He does download stuff from the internet despite being told not to. We have to remove
his downloads every now and then. He's a 10-year-old boy, what else do you expect?

Have you any suggestions that might speed up his system?
