It sems likely that the system is suffering multiple problems. First, the disk has
only 15% free space and is almost certainly severely fragmented by now. Windows defrag
will refuse to work if there is less than 15% free space. Generally, I would aim
to increase free space to around 30% to 40% before defrag by backing up large files
(such as video clips) to CD/DVD and deleting them from the hard disk. Second, if
the only anti-malware solution that is installed is AVG Free version and your stepson
has been downloading suspect material from the Web, it is highly likely that the
machine has all manner of undetected nasties on it, stealing system resources and
slowing it right down. As a quick check, bring up the Task Manager using Ctrl-Alt-Del
and look for processes using up CPU time - an idle PC should only be using around
5% CPU time or less, certainly in single figures. I would advise that you download
Malwarebytes Anti-malware and/or
SuperAntiSpyware, run some scans and
take it from there. Post back with what you find. Cheers. Spexx.
