Show hidden folders freezes PC

Heres a strange one - If I select "Show Hidden Folders" from file menu the PC freezes
for a good 20 seconds before coming back to life. Bizarre thing is when you untick
"Show Hidden Folders" it works straight away! Windows XP Pro SP3
