The problem with the PC sounds like serious disk corruption or the activity of malware.
I would run a chkdsk /f c: to test the disk structure integrity for starters. I use
an aquarium magnet to wipe floppy disks! A few waves of the thing over a floppy leaves
them blank and in need of a reformat. I also found that leaving them on top of a
battery charger (which has a large transformer inside it) wipes them pretty quick
