I found the refresh would not work. By using ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager, select 'Processes' tab. Right click explorer.exe and End Process. Say Yes to warning box. This clears the desktop. In Windows Task Manager which should still be open select file, New Task. Type explorer in text box and click OK. Desktop should now be restored.
