I've run into this twice on amd processors.
Turn the machine off and on restart keep hitting f8.
After the choice screen come on, arrow up to "last
safe system" or whatever. It will go away.
Go to msconfig and check off sos and no gui, under
boot ini. This will let you watch drivers load and boot much faster-works for intel
or amd.
I'm suspicious that the daily update for mcafee caused
this on amd machines. Too much coincidence.
