access denied to hard drive

I’ve hooked up an IDE hard drive with a USB enclosure to my laptop in an effort to
retrieve data. The motherboard on the system that the hard drive came out of is
fried. The hard drive shows up fine on my laptop, but when I go to open a password
protected folder, I get the “access denied message”. How do I gain access?

I do have a password rest program, but it only works when the hard drive will boot
up on a system. I’ve tried putting the hard drive into a system and booting from
it but the hard drive is evidently corrupt and I get the blue screen of death.

Is there a way to access the protected folder by hooking it up to my laptop in the
way I’ve described?

Thanks,
David
