OK. Actually, I could have just DLed them as independent (CAB?) files anyways.
For most s/w, I prefer doing this than to allowing any sort of "autoinstall", but
for Windows itself, I let it do what the update site wants. Not "automatic", exactly,
but "express" or "recommended" or w/e that top button reads.
If I get stuck doing a *3rd* reinstall, tho, rest assured I will start doing "DL
and save" or slipstreams!!

yep

firewall enabled, before installing any other software products. That will lessen
the chances of anything screwing up during the process. hope this helps. Cheers.
Spexx.
Actually, this fatal crash occured before I had installed or DLed *anything* else.
XP updates were my first and only priority at that point.
HOWEVER, I notice that many of my apps worked during this time. This despite the
"add/remove programs" table not listing ANY of them! What's up with that? They're
either installed or they're NOT, aren't they?
I fully expected having to install everything from scratch, so it's just baffling
that they're already installed.
Not sure whether Z/A was one such app which worked, since I didn't actually try booting
it during this time. I am vaguely aware of the problems which can result, so I was
indeed waiting for the XP updates to wrap up before reinstalling and/or booting.
-----
NB: Z/A working fine NOW -- since I've more-or-less aborted the last 9 updates this
time around, I've gone ahead and installed, updated, and most everything else I used
to.
