I have a 40X CD drive sitting on my desk here which will behave in exactly the same way if I try to use it for that purpose. I also have a newer 52X CD drive sitting on my desk which is absolutely fine if I try to use it for that purpose. I once tried cleaning the laser lens on the 40X to see if it would make a difference, which it didn't. I'm convinced that it is something to do with read-retries not being handled very well by the installation "shell" but cannot prove that one way or another. I don't suppose this helps very much, but maybe it's interesting? Cheers. Spexx.
