Blue Screen - ACPI Driver Not Loading

I get an occasional Blue Screen crash during boot of a WinXP SP3 system with Intel
Celeron Processor.
The boot log of the latest occurrence shows MUP.sys loading followed by failure to
load all subsequent drivers starting with the ACPI Uniprocessor PC driver.
The boot log of a successful boot shows MUP.sys loading followed by IntelPPM.sys.
I assume IntelPPM.sys is a component of the ACPI Uniprocessor PC driver.
Any thoughts on how to proceed to fix this problem?
Following the most recent occurrence, I was able to boot by using the F8 option and
booting with the "Last Known Good Configuration".
After some failures I can recover simply with another reset and boot of the computer.
I have also done WinXP Repair Installs which take a lot of time.
Memtest86-plus passes memory tests with a cold or hot system. I have run numerous
virus and spyware checks with nothing detected.
It does appear that IntelPPM.sys was updated to a later version earlier this year
by Windows Update.
As I understand it, ACPI and IntelPPM.sys are involved with the Power Management
Interface. I believe IntelPPM.sys is used to throttle the CPU to save power.
The system is a Desktop so I wonder if I really need the driver although I don't
know if it is actually the problem.
Lastly, can the WinXP Registry purge itself of problems after a successful boot when
booting with the "Last Known Good Configuration"?
