I understand your statement that Windows doesn't "forget," but then I have the experience
of the status of my icons changing on their own. The icons in question don't have
an independent way of changing that status, and the notification settings do often
survive a reboot. What seems to be happening is that Windows "forgets" some icon
status and then reverts tot he default, which is to show the icon only when active.
Maybe there is a limit of taskbar icons and, after a while, the table that stores
manual settings overflows. I don't know. I'll try your registry fix and see what
happens. I'll also take a look at the program you use to control startup order (though
the actual order of the taskbar icons isn't that important to me).
