In "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" I select "Hide Inactive Icons," and then in
"Customize Notifications" I select "Always Hide" for the icons I always want hidden,
"Always Show" for the icons I always want to see, and leave what appears to be the
default, "Hide when inactive" for icons that I want to see only when their programs
are doing something. For instance, I always want to see my my DSL connection icon,
I never want to see my Norton Antivirus icon, and I want to see my printer status
monitor icon only when the printer is doing something. This should all work fine,
but in practice, some of the "Always Show" and "Always Hidden" settings revert back
to "Hide when inactive."
