OK well that is the standard way to do it and it ought to work. Perhaps Explorer
is tripping itself up and could do with a clear-out of the bit bucket! Using regedit,
navigate to the key:

there are two values "IconStreams" and "PastIconsStream" containing a bunch of binary
data which represents what appears in the list of icons to show/hide in the Custom
taskbar configuration menu. Simply delete those two registry values, close regedit,
log out and back in again. You may well find that "good behaviour" has returned as
