I would clear his desktop (except for the apps he will be using) and disable the
start menu. That should be sufficient for a 5 year old.

****** One time only ******

1. Open every other account, create a new desktop folder, and copy all icons into
it. Do this as some shortcuts will be for "all users" and others (like "my computer")
are opened through the control panel and may also be system wide. With "My documents",
etc make sure you create a shortcut so you do not have 2 copies of all your data
-- too easy to update one and print the outdated file. Clean this up anytime after
deleting icons in step 2.

1a. CREATE A RESTORE POINT! Better yet, use Erunt:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

2. Clear his desktop and add the apps for him. You may need his account to be ADMIN
temporarily.

****** For him ******

3. Disable the start menu as shown here -- Do not download, just use regedit:
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/905/

4. Re-boot to his account.

****** For you ******

5. Use CTRL-ALT-DEL to run regedit again to re-enable the start menu. My start menu
turned back on without a re-boot, but not off.

If you are somewhat familiar with regedit and *.reg files, this can be simplified
somewhat. Just remember that using a *.reg file does NOT edit the key, but creates
a new one. So you must delete the opposite key as shown here:
