My earlier post was a reply to a reply to a reply... it's somewhere up there. I had
the exact same problem and my problem at least appears to be hardware related.
The problem suddenly started as I was scrolling through a folder with a mouse I've
been using for years. The behavior is very strange though... left click works on
some thing (like minimize buttons that don't normally respond to right-click) but
not on others (like the bare desktop where this is interpreted as a right-click).
Rebooting or trying different USB ports didn't seem to have an effect. I had another
mouse of the same model at work and this one appears to have no problem. I swapped
between mice a couple of times and the best conclusion I can draw is that the one
is now broken.
Strangely while I have the broken one plugged in the trackpad on my lappy also exhibits
the same faulty behaviour; as soon as I unplug it the trackpad is also fixed.
My laptop is a Sony VAIO and my mouse is a Logitech... one of those with the cord
that rolls up.
