Just thought I'd let everyone know that I had this same problem for about the last
week or so and I managed to solve it, at least on my machine anyway. It turned out
to be a problem between Winamp and my CMI8738 sound card drivers. What was weird
is that after that my sound card drivers refused to uninstall so I could reinstall
new drivers, even after multiple reboots and in safe mode. In the end, I had to pull
the sound card.
Hope maybe this helps someone else having this same problem.
