Eventually I looked for the restore disks which came with my computer (Emachines 770). The main restore disk has never worked (!) so each time I've had to reformat I've used a Fujitsu Siemens disk instead. However, I did find a driver disk that came with my computer so I inserted it and luckily found an audio driver on there. I installed it, and hey presto! Sound! That was the ONLY thing that worked in my case, and I wish I'd thought of it in the first place and saved myself three hours of reading this thread and trying all of the tips on here. Thanks to everyone though who spent time typing solutions. I guess every computer is different, and in my case, exasperating! I'm glad I didn't have to reformat though.
