***SOLVED***
It appears there are many solutions and obviously all are dependant upon the actual
original CAUSE.
CAUSE (mine). Windows picture & fax viewer not working thus causing desktop problems.
If you share the same problem here's the fix that worked for me.
To Re-Enable Pic/fax viewer: Start - Run - regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
To DisablePic/fax viewer: Start - Run - regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
Then go back into Display settings/desktop & reset choices (now you should have .bmp
& any jpeg files showing in menu (assuming you have some)), the goto System properties>advanced
& check 'use drop shadows for icons'>apply etc... Then log-off, log-on, then you
may need to reset setting again (may be required twice as it didn't stick for me
1st time around).
