Well, Martin, I put the USB device into a port on the machine. Any one. Doesn't matter--back,
front, whichever.
The machine, via its operating system (WIN XP SP3) makes a sound and a little popup
appears down in the lower right-hand corner telling me it sees the device. It even
gives the proper name for the USB stick or hard drive or whatever.
Then the "Found Hew Hardware Wizard" pops up. It insists that it must have drivers
from an installation disk. Of course, I haven't got any because none came with the
"Plug-and-play" devices. At this point you can have the wizard search your hard drive
or the Internet for the proper driver. Neither one works--it can't find a driver
on my hard drive or on the Internet.
Then, after either letting it search my hard drive or the Internet for the driver
and after it fails, I close it. Finally a new popup appears in the lower right-hand
corner of the screen with a message similar to: "Your device didn't install properly
and it might not work."
The kicker is that some USB devices work fine just as they always have (printer,
older USB sticks, digital camera, scanner, etc.)
The problem manifests with devices that have not ever been connected to the computer.
