Hi!
I really have searched and scrutinized the forum for this, as I thought this would
be quite common and a no-noto fix but I can't find anything.
The following problem:
Although I have succeded to completely reinstall WIndows XP SP1 and upgraded to SP3
and checked disks and so on, it can't still reboot without having the original SP
CD put in. It wont start with HD. I have to go into BIOS and change the boot order
to CD first. When I put in CD it cruises right in to XP SP3 without a hatch.
I have tried the recovery consoled with ALL of these commands Bootcfg and switches
and MBR and SYSTEMROOT and whatever. I have checked that the BOOT.INI is ok and so
on.
Now, I hear you guys going "Uh uh, so typical virus". But this computer hasn't been
on the internet at all, and has no antivirus program installed. All updates from
Microsoft (from SP to SP3 and patches) where done the hard way.
Now, since I have done a complete reinstall and reformat, it still can't find the
boot sector on the hard disk. It registered alright, and activated alright. The system
works, BUT only with a XP Install CD put in. I've checked the boot order to inside
the boot.ini file.
The messafe i get when it has done POST TEST is:
"DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
And when I put in CD and press enter it runs ok. No signs in event viewern about
this at all. All BIOS and such things are updated completely. Just for info, this
system crashed when isntalling drivers for my new soundcard a MOTU 828 mk3. I've
asked over at their site too, but that's another problem, since I've totally reinstalled
now, so there ain't no residue left. That computer is totally "un-netted" using it
just for multimedia purposes and has no stray, freeware, or dodgy programs installed,
at all.
Thanks in advance!
/Mats
