I re-installed drivers, updated software, scoured the registry, and tweaked every available mouse setting I could find. Nothing worked. I disabled the eraser-head mouse, and the problem persisted. I disabled the touchpad, and re-enabled the eraser head; the problem disappeared immediately. Apparently, the touchpad on this laptop is broken somehow, and was wedging one of the mouse buttons. I'll forgive the laptop, as it is five years old, and is entitled to have developed a quirk or two by this point.
