Preinstalled system from the big PC manaufacturers need their recovery media so that
you don't have to activate it, which MS stopped doing in 2005 (internat activation).
MS can decline to activate in suspicious circumctances where you are using a number
mounted on the machine. A preinstalled machine from the factory usually has a different
number than the one on the machine (many of those numbers were disabled, depending
on your supplied recovery option from the factory). Difficult to know what you have
from a forum. A repair install from your media may/will have many issues typically,
and repairing a big OEM machine can result in the users data and aplications being
wiped out warns MS, as well as injecting some driver issues on some machines IME.
OEM systems take different CD keys than say a retail/upgrade version disc. If you
repair his system with the wrong disc, you will be asked for a key, and to activate,
which can open up a can of worms if he is supposed to have manufacturer recovery
discs.
The best thing is to contact the manufacturer to see what your options are. If recovery
discs are available, then even for a small fee, that will be the best and most hassle
free way to go.
Overall, we can't help much without knowing more information, like the brand of machine
and exactly what type of install it is, Like a VLK, MS OEM etc version that was is/was
in it.
