Many thanks to geekpm and Rich Kurtz for responding so quickly. Fortunately I have managed to recover the situiation without using REGEDIT or System Restore. I found a spurious program entry in Add/Remove Prpgrams (not sure why), and when I REMOVED that program, my problem with EDIT/ Copy disappeared. All rather weird but thanks again to geek and Rich.
