Hi!! I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I just wanna let everyone know that I
was having the same problem about my volume icon going in and out or being inactive
until just now cause I rebooted my computer 6 times in all just to make sure it's
fixed for good lol. Anyway, here's what I think helped fix my issue. It seems to
have fixed it so far anyway. I tried Kelly's fix from Kelly's Corner. I'm still not
sure if that fixed it or not. I made sure it was checked in the control panel to
place the volume control in the system tray was checked and for me I thought it may
have something to do with me hiding my inactive icons but it didn't. Then I believe
it could've been one or 2 things or both that solved my issue. I created a systray.exe
new key in the registry and did what it said to do about creating it in the registry
from this post right here and I waited till I tried everything that sounded like
it could relate to my issue and I just a little bit ago restarted my computer 5 times
to make sure that it's fixed for good and the 6th time to make sure that it still
looked that way and it sure did!! I did it a 6th time to just make sure that it stayed
like that cause I created a shortcut from my C:\Windows\System32 folder from sndvol32
and created a shortcut to my desktop and I read another thread or maybe here too
about WindowsAudio to see if it was on disabled or manual and what may or may not
have helped me is by switching my WindowsAudio in Services in the control panel from
disabled or manual to Automatic. I believe that's all I did outside of trying other
threads that people posted that didn't help me much if any. They may or may not have
but I know doing that in the registry and on WindowsAudio did. It was probably most
likely the one on the registry I guess cause I don't think I had a New Data Key where
I needed to cause I didn't see one in the right window pane in the registry unless
I just didn't see it but I think it's cause I didn't have a new data key entry for
systray.exe. cause it let me create a new one. Cause if there was one already it
probably wouldn't have let me create another one. Unless something installed over
my Systray.exe. file when I installed something else and whatever it was I installed
overwrote my Systray.exe. file, I guess. I don't know. I'm not sure but I've got
it fixed now tho, I hope for good. So now I can delete my extra copy of the volume
icon on my desktop which I'm proud to say that I've already done that. This issue
has been bugging me for a little while now. It's annoying and it's not fun when you
can't just go straight to your volume icon when you can't hear something or when
you're listening to somethng and you either can't hear/stand the music when it starts
out too loud and it's about to bust your ear drums lol. I'm glad I can say I've got
mine fixed for a while and I hope for good now. :) I just wanted to let people know
what I've done so that maybe I can help people with their situations. Maybe just
maybe it will help ya'll too!! :)
P.S. One other thing that I remember that I done too was Hide Icons for Networked
Upnp devices and that's one of the last things that I did too. I'm not sure if it
helped any or not tho to be quite honest.
P.S.S. Other people may not want to do this one. I did it cause I didn't really want
WDS anymore but ya'll don't have to do this one if ya'll don't want to. And the one
thing that I did first was uninstall Windows Desktop Search 4.0 and I'm glad that
I did cause I don't know if it had anything to do with my icons disappearing in my
system tray or not but I know it was probably hiding them too. I think it was. I
didn't use WDS any since I've installed it anyway. I'm not sure about it taking up
about 5 MB or not but it looked like it was taking up alot of room from what I saw
on my computer and in the Add/Remove in the control panel when I saw how many megabytes
or whatever from when I installed it from Windows Update Site or uninstalled it one.
I forgot which one or both. That's all I've got to say now lol.
I just wanna say thanks to Brent and everyone else who posts this same post in this
and other forums and stuff cause if it hadn't been for you and others like you posting
this same post and the word getting spread around it would be driving people like
me even more insane if they didn't or couldn't fix their system trays and volume
icons and other icons and other stuff lol. Thanks alot!! I appreciate it!! Now it's
not driving me crazy anymore for right now since I have my volume icon in my system
tray fixed now lol.
