Well I just thought I'd add my two cents...I came on here panicking because my PC
worked fine last night, turned it on this morning and got the same problem. Tried
to run Setup from the XP Boot Disc, and it froze at "Setup is starting Windows".
As many people here have talked about removing various USB gear, I noticed that I'd
left my iPod plugged in. Unplugged it - Setup continued! It was then I realised that
the BIOS on my Gigabyte MB has an option for Legacy USB Support for memory sticks,
removeable drivers and so on, and when resetting to Optimized Defaults this option
is disabled. Now Windows boots up fine if a) the Legacy USB Support is disabled and
my iPod *isn't* plugged in when the PC is switched on, or b) Legacy USB Support is
enabled and my iPod is plugged in when the PC is switched on. So it would appear
that Windows gets confused by the fact that your BIOS doesn't support USB storage
devices during POST despite one of these devices being plugged in. Simple problem
in the end, but a bugger to work out unless you listen to other people's solutions
it would seem!!
