Thanks so much, Lance! dumppo did it for me on my Dell Dimension 4600/XP Home, which after years of powering down everything on Standby, suddenly refused to power down the fan (nothing new had been installed). A check in the BIOS showed that S3 mode was still selected at startup, but running dumppo showed that after loading Windows, it had reverted to S1 mode! Anyway, dumppo switched it back to S1 and now I (and the rest of the household) can enjoy the sound of silence when I'm not at the keyboard.
