Hi all, wondering if anyone here might have something "new" on this topic. I've checked
a bunch of things so far and none have worked out.
a) the permissions on the Enum reg key were already set for Everyone=Read, and System=Full
Control. Trying to 'replace permissions entries on all child objects...' just to
try and reinforce the Enum parent key settings encounters the 'could not set security
in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys' message...
b) Plug and Play services is and always has been running...
c) Ran Swandog46's apropos spyware/rootkit/virus removal tool...
d) searched manually for the $%&'()*+ reg names in the WHOLE registry, found nothing...
Symptoms include many of those seemingly attributed to the old apropos viral thingy...
- Empty device manager
- SLOOOOOOW 'My Computer' access in Win Explorer or in Browse/Open dialogs...
- USB key connections sometimes need to be dis/re-connected in order to get to the
drive
- etc etc
I'm grabbing rootkitrevealer from sysinternals and going to try rootkitty from UBCD4Win
to see if either of those shed any light. Will try and post my findings here...
FYI: the 'reason' we found these things out on this PC (my in-laws) is that they
were trying to get songs onto a newly purchased iPod Nano, and when connecting the
iPod, they get a crash in "iPodService Module" and an error from what appears to
be a Dell Printer Software add-on (Memory Card manager) "Failed to locate supported
file types or there are no photos found on this device".
Bottom line, they can't put songs on their kids iPod, and some other messages on
some forums indicated it could be related to whatever is blocking up the device manager...
We'll see...
