Shouldn't matter. What I do to retrieve Files from a Defective Windows Install, is
boot from one of the Free Linux Live CD's. Mount the Windows Drive from Linux and
Copy the Data I want to a USB drive. Then just reinstall Windows after the files
are safe.
Buying a USB Drive would cost the same as a New Windows CD, and
it is a better value, since you got usable Hardware when done and a way to Backup
your Data on a Second Drive. (priceless).
