Shouldn't matter. What I do to retrieve Files from a Defective Windows Install, is boot from one of the Free Linux Live CD's. Mount the Windows Drive from Linux and Copy the Data I want to a USB drive. Then just reinstall Windows after the files are safe.

Buying a USB Drive would cost the same as a New Windows CD, and it is a better value, since you got usable Hardware when done and a way to Backup your Data on a Second Drive. (priceless).
