You've been misinformed. HP Recovery CD's provide for both recovery (saving files)
and Restore to Factory settings, which will format the HDD and reset the computer
to factory settings.
You will be presented with on-screen choices as to which method you prefer.
One Caveat when using a M$ WinXP CD is you may end up with XP drivers, for some of
your hardware, that will have to be replaced with HP Drivers you'll need to download
from HP.
If you decide on the M$ CD, go to HP support and download all the drivers for your
HP model#. Burn them to CD first.
