I'm not sure if it was a drastic measure. It seemed no more complicated to do than
to have Windows 98 install over itself, which I had previously done a number of times
on my old computer.
Yes, the F10 feature applies to the specific computer I have [an HP] and not the
operating system, but it sure feels good to have the OS up and running again just
the same. After it got going, I updated all my anti-virus/spyware/malware/etc. programs
[I have a half-dozen of them because you never know] and ran an extensive check of
the system, after which I got a complete clean bill of health, not an invasive problem
detected. So it's hard to say what made the OS suddenly crash like that and unable
to get past the options page when trying to load things up on reboot.
As much as I'm not keen on HP computers [this one was given to me free, so I wasn't
going to argue], I'm at least glad it came with the F10 option, especially since
no XP disks came with it. I only ended up losing the functionality of about 6 or
7 minor programs, all of which I simply reinstalled and am now totally back to where
I was before the crash happened. It was the only option I had left to try, short
of a complete reformatting of the hard drive, which really would've been drastic.
