Can't start in safe mode

I have a custom computer, XP with SP3 installed and it's running perfectly.I wanted to run a virus check in safe mode but when I rebooted and pressed F8 everything progressed as normal until I got a black screen with a list of files. After this nothing happened, this screen simply remained.I tried resetting msconfig to selective startup but got the same result.Yet the computer started perfectly into normal mode.Google has not been any help here , hope someone can shed some light!
