The Event Viewer (Admin tools in the control panel) may or may not have error messages. 
 Usually if it doesn't log an error message you have a hardware issue. Drivers can 
do it also but is a less likely source.  Run a test on the HDD if the manufacturer 
has a diagnostics utility, many times I have seen an unresponsive HDD cause this. 
 Make sure there aren't any other heat related issues going on.  You can try removing 
memory or checking with this:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/downloads/win2k.mspx

These problems can be complicated to find unless you have spare parts to swap out 
sometimes.  Possibly software, but less likely IME..
