While I recognize this thread is ancient, I would just like to say thank you to this poster. Killing all but the essential processes made the installer pop up like magic. While I am sure that it was a specific process on my machine that started with a letter w, I am not in a position now to be more specific. I would say try this first before trying other solutions.
