I had the same issue. Explorer.exe will become corrupt, or unlinked because of viruses/malware/spyware
etc...
There are two options to resolving this issue:
1. Everytime you boot up your computer you do ctrl+alt+del then file new and run
explorer. This can get annoying.
2. This actually resolved the issue I was having.
a. Download the latest service pack from Microsoft (don't do automatic updates! Google
it!) There are only three service packs, SP1, SP2 and SP3.
b. Save that latest service pack to your computer.
c. Remove/Uninstall the latest service pack that is installed on your machine.
d. Reboot and install the service pack you just downloaded.
e. Problem should be resolved.
